The Rate Card

The goal of the rate card is simple; encourage doctors to negotiate for each and every extra-contractual shift.

Please provide your information below to personalise the rate card. None of this information is stored or collected in any way whatsoever; it is only used to make your card. You can apply our recommendations by adding your name, credentials (e.g. MBBS MRCP etc.), and grade, and click "Apply Recommended Rates". These are closely aligned to the BMA rates.

You are of course welcome to adjust the card to your preference. Simply set your base rate manually, and apply the percentage increments for your out of hours as you see fit. It is more important that you start to negotiate for your shifts, than it is to fight for any single particular price point.

Remember, do not consider any NHS trust "rates" as anything other than an opening low ball offer. You would be foolish to accept the first offer on your house or car, this is no different.

How is this different to the BMA rate card?

The BMA rate cards can be found at the following links:

We think these rate cards are excellent. For the first time in almost a decade, they have been the seed for doctors to stand up for themselves and negotiate fair pay for their shifts. The BMA rate cards do not let you personalise your pay, and group people into pay bands. We think you should be negotiating your pay based on your experience, skills and qualifications while taking into account factors such as supply and demand.
